About Akumal Monkey Sanctuary
Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animal Centre is amazing place that offers shelter on both a temporary or permanent basis to a wide variety of animals that have lost their natural living habitats for multiple reasons, be it environmental issues or their homes destroyed by humans due to multiple reasons.
Some animals will live at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives if its not possible to find alternative natural habitats either due to health or other reasons, whereas others are taken to the sanctuary to recuperate before they are released back to the wild once they are strong enough again.
The sanctuary currently houses around 55 different species including monkeys such as capuchins, lemurs, tamarins, spider and squirrel monkeys as well as otters, tropical birds, reptiles and other animals.
Conservation
One of the primary objectives of the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is to safeguard various primate species that are native to the region. This is carried out through carefully designed conservation programs. The sanctuary strives to provide a safe and nurturing environment for primates that may have been rescued from different situations for different reasons, such as the illegal pet trade or habitat destruction and offers them safe sanctuary for life or temporarily, if they can be released back to the wild safely again.
Education and Awareness
The sanctuary places a strong emphasis on education and awareness and visitors have the chance to learn about the importance of primate conservation and the role these intelligent creatures play in maintaining ecological balance. Knowledgeable guides share insights into the challenges faced by primates in the wild and how the sanctuary contributes to their well-being.
The sanctuary also work with PROFEPA (The Federal Office of Environment Protection) and various universities around Mexico for research to help improve biodiversity conservation.
The sanctuary is an incredible place to visit where you can get up close and personal with some of the tamer residents and learn about the different species. Its both fun and educational. A great location for a family day out.
