The Aztec Era
During the Aztec era, Chapultepec Castle was a sacred place and also used by the Aztec rulers as a summer retreat.
Post Spanish Conquest in the Spanish Colonial Period
During the Spanish Colonial Period (1521 - 1821) after the conquest, Chapultepec Castle was used by Spanish Viceroys as a country residence.
The Mexican - American War
During the war, Chapultepec Castle served a significant role as the location for the Battle of Chapultepec and was home to a group of young military cadets (called the Niños Héroes) who fought against the U.S. invading forces.
Imperial Residence
After Mexico gained its independence back in 1821, Chapultepec Castle later became the official residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota and then future Mexican Presidents, with President Porfirio Diaz making significant renovations to the castle during his time in office.
National Museum
Today, Chapultepec Castle is home to the National Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia) with multiple exhibitions on show relating to the history of Mexico and various artifacts including art as well as historical documents.
