Things to do in Cancún
Chichén Itzá Tickets - The Number 1 BESTSELLER in Cancún
Cancún may be famous for it's sandy beaches and tropical water but the surrounding area is also home to some great other experiences including UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore! Here we list some of the most popular things to do in Cancún as well as some great not so well known options!
Chichén Itzá Tickets- The UNESCO World Heritage Site
Chichén Itzá as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site is also listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It was one of the major cities from the Maya civilisation and played a significant role in the region during the 7th to 10th century AD.
Chichén Itzá is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico and welcomes around 2,000,000 visitors each year. Some of the city's most iconic structures include the pyramid called "El Castillo" or the "Temple of Kulkulkan" which is dedicated to the Serpent God KulKulkan. "The Temple of the Warriors", the "Great Ball Court" and the "Observatory" are also popular structures to explore.
The pyramid is also famous for its relationship to the Mayan calendar. Each of its four sides has 91 steps leading up a staircase to the summit and when you include the summit, it equals to 365 - the number of days in the year.
The pyramid was also designed to align perfectly so that when the equinox happens, the shadow from the sun creates an illusion of a serpent creeping down the side of the pyramid and is a testament to the Maya advanced engineering skills.
The Mayan Ruins of Tulum Tickets
The Mayan Ruins of Tulum are another of the very popular archaeological sites in Mexico. Sitting on a clifftop overlooking the beautiful Caribbean waters.
The walled city (which is where its name comes from as 'Tulum' translates to "Wall") dates back to 564 but it was a major port from around 1200 to 1521 as it controlled maritime commerce along the coast to Belize.
At the site you can see beautifully preserved frescoes and other relics from the Mayan civilisation as well as the incredible views the location offers being perched on top of a 12-meter cliff.
Visitors aren't allowed to climb the structures at Tulum in order to protect them.
We would also suggest enjoying a walk along the beautiful beach that sits below it. You will see why when you arrive!
Sailing Day Trips from Cancún Ticket Options
A very popular option for tourists is to enjoy a fun sailing day trip from Cancún to one of the surrounding islands. Popular ones include Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and Cozumel.
