About Tula Archaeological Site

The Tula Archaeological site is the ancient city of Tula, a significant pre-Columbian archaeological site which is located in the present-day state of Hidalgo, Mexico.

Tula is renowned for being the capital of the Toltec civilization, a culture that flourished in Mesoamerica during the Early Postclassic period (circa 900-1150 AD). The site is also known as Tula de Allende, which is named after the Mexican independence hero Ignacio Allende.

What you can see on a visit to Tula Archaeological Site

  1. Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon: Tula is home to two prominent pyramids, often referred to as the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. These structures are similar in design to the more famous pyramids found at Teotihuacan. Visitors can climb the Pyramid of the Sun and enjoy the great views.
  2. Atlantean Figures: One of the most iconic features of Tula is the presence of colossal stone statues known as 'Atlantean figures' or 'Atlantean warriors'. These sculptures, which depict warriors wearing feathered headdresses and butterfly-shaped pectorals, stand on top of the Temple of the Feathered Serpent (or Temple of Quetzalcoatl). They are one of the main draws for visitors.
  3. Temple of the Feathered Serpent: This temple is adorned with depictions of feathered serpents, a significant deity in Mesoamerican cultures. The temple, also known as the 'Temple of Quetzalcoatl', has sculpted serpent heads and other intricate carvings. Visitors can explore the temple's architectural details.
  4. Burnt Palace (Palacio Quemado): Another notable structure at Tula is the 'Burnt Palace' which visitors can explore. A large compound that is not fully understood but may have served as a royal residence or administrative center.
  5. Ball Court: Tula features a Mesoamerican ball court, suggesting the importance of the ball game in the religious and political aspects of Toltec society.
  6. Museum: Tula archaeological Site has has an onsite museum that displays various artifacts that have been recovered from the site, along with further information about the period.

History to the site

The Toltec civilization at Tula is associated with the legendary figure Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, a semi-mythical ruler who is said to have played a crucial role in Toltec history. The site of Tula provides valuable insights into the cultural and architectural achievements of the Toltec civilization. The Atlantean figures, in particular, have become iconic representations of ancient Mesoamerican art and culture.

Tula declined in the 12th century, and its abandonment is associated with the decline of the Toltec civilization. Archaeological excavations at Tula have unearthed important artifacts and structures, contributing to our understanding of Mesoamerican history and civilization.
