About MUSA Cancún Underwater Art Museum

The MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) Cancún Underwater Art Museum is located off the coast of Cancún, Mexico. Yes, that right... it's in the sea!

Where art meets nature! It's a one-of-a-kind underwater museum that seamlessly blends art, conservation, and the oceanic environment, and is likely the wettest you will ever get on a trip to a museum! Well, you find us another underwater museum!

Established in 2009, the museum was created as a collaboration between the Mexican government, the National Marine Park, and the Cancún Nautical Association with its primary purpose being to divert tourists away from the nearby fragile coral reefs whilst simultaneously fostering the growth of artificial coral reefs with unique structures placed underwater to encourage the growth of new corals to attract marine life and is one of the first of its kind!

What visitors will see at the underwater museum

Submerged Sculptures

One of the most captivating features of MUSA Cancún Underwater Museum is its extensive collection of submerged sculptures!

The intricate artworks were crafted by various artists to ensure they are all different and have been strategically placed on the ocean floor to create this unique submerged art gallery!

The sculptures range from human figures to more abstract forms, and create a visually stunning and thought-provoking experience for divers, snorkelers and glass-bottomed boat visitors alike!

Encouraging Coral Colonization

Beyond its artistic appeal, the museum actually serves a critical ecological purpose. The sculptures are made from materials that encourage the coral grow and so they act as a catalyst for the formation of more reefs which helps the see life and protects the existing natural reefs that live in the area which were being damaged by tourism.

Over time, these sculptures become inhabited by vibrant coral colonies and also provide a habitat for marine life which also then promotes biodiversity. So although it's a fascinating place to visit, it's also doing good for the sea!

It's a unique combination of art and environmental conservation, where creativity and nature collaborate to sustain the important and delicate underwater ecosystem. One of the first of it's kind and a program that will likely be copied around the world where other reef's exist and are in danger.
